My passion for smoking and grilling was ignited in Raleigh, North Carolina, under the guidance of my father. From perfecting whole hog BBQ to crafting unique dry rub seasoning blends, I’ve dedicated my life to bringing people together through the joy of good food. It all began in high school and flourished during my college years at Appalachian State.

Now, with Cmac’s Rubs, I’m excited to share the flavors and experiences that have shaped my journey. Join me in savoring the universal smiles and “mmm” sounds that great BBQ brings to every table.

My name is Collin McDonald and I was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. From a young age, my father influenced my passion for food, specifically smoking and grilling. Then we have  BBQ, and I prefer cooking whole hog and serving others as we are called to do in many ways. BBQ or barbeque has many meanings and Cmac’s Rubs will enhance any one of them!

I didn’t know it at the time, but the idea of “Cmac’s Rubs” began to flourish in high school. While my parents were taking my younger sister, a standout soccer player, to evening games and practices, I was home after wrestling or football practice beginning to work on my craft. A semi-stubborn teen began to learn how to create new flavors and enhance well known ones through the preparing dinner so the family could eat together. Sitting down as a family for meals has had such an impact on my life and has been carried on.

Throughout college I would make my own dry rub seasoning blends and rubs and always host cook outs and meals with groups of friends at Appalachian State. Friends would ask to pay me for a bag full of “Cmac’s Rub” however this dream never clicked until years later with an invite to a local market from the owners of a local nursery I had become friends with. My enthusiasm for cooking continues to grow, and to this day, one of the things I cherish most is the universal smile and “mmm” sound from anyone who tries something great.

Raised by a family full of Christian examples, my faith in Jesus Christ also took years to flourish. I have been a believer since I can remember, but have also made my fair share of mistakes. The grace I am given daily is so undeserving at times, and I hope others can relate. The cornerstone of my life and the source of my success stem from the Father above. I hope this small part of my testimony can help someone turn to Christ or for another to feel compelled to bring someone else along to grow the Kingdom.

I have so many great memories in my life made around a kitchen table, a bbq pit, or a grill on the beach. When a deep love for Jesus Christ and a passion for food collide, I feel so blessed to share with people open arms and a meal they will fully enjoy.

Any good food starts with a good base,  just as I believe a fulfilled life is rooted in Jesus Christ. I hope my story is relatable and gives those who may feel interested to ask questions, and those who are believers to move and to be there for others as we are called. I hope to encourage those who may have doubts to make that leap, be bold for your why and your dreams. Thank you to every single one of you for your time and I hope you enjoy!
